Apart from the operators, most people do not know how vacuum trucks work. In fact, vacuum trucks are extremely complex and technical machines, together with understanding how they operate will allow you to notice issues or malfunctions before they happen.
Vacuum trucks work by first creating a vacuum inside the rank. This is completed by engaging a vacuum pump that pulls air through a filter, followed by secondary and primary shut-offs. The primary and secondary shut-offs act as guards to make sure the tank does not overfill. These shut-offs are made of a stainless steel ball and rubber seat inside a cage.
A vacuum pump utilises rotary veins that rub against the pump in order to create an airflow in and out the tank. This is completed through centrifugal force.
There are around six or more veins in each pump, this depends on the model of the vein and the material it is manufactured from. Most veins are made from a Kevlar-type material which is far more superior to other models.
The last filter is created to not let passage of unknown material into the pump via a fine screen. Without a filter, the veins would be destroyed by rubbish.
The secondary shut-off must be drained after each time the tank is emptied so the tank serves as a moisture trap.
Vacuum Trucks Platforms
An ordinary type of platform used on vacuum trucks on small applications is a motor and pump combination. For example, a vacuum pump and motor runs the pump – however other trucks use Power Take Off.
In addition, there is a pressure relief and vacuum relief valve that protects the vacuum truck tank from too much pressure or vacuum.
